That's a good question, and luckily for Chinese people learning English, the R in Chinese pronunciation is similar to the English R.

Let's work backwards and start with the Chinese R since you know that. Think of the words RU GUO (if) and RE (hot). To pronounced these Rs in Chinese, the lips are puckered a little and the tongue is in the center of the mouth.

But to pronounce the English R, like in run and rain, keep the tongue in the same position as the Chinese R, but spread you mouth open more widely, like in a smile. Your upper and lower teeth should be close, but not touching.

The Chinese R also seems to have a very slight "zh" sound in front of it. But the English R doesn't have this. That's why when some Chinese pronounce the world "Really?" in English, it sounds like they say, "zh-rilly?" But that is incorrect.

Does this help?

Don't feel too bad. The R sound is difficult for Americans, too. Keep listening and practicing. Sometimes looking at your mouth in the mirror while practicing helps, too. If you're in Shanghai, maybe you can join one of our parties to practice the sound in person. Keep watching this BBS to find out when that will be.  Wink

I've found that there are distinct pronunciation differences between the "R" sounds in "re" (热), "ru guo" (如果), and "ruan" (软). The first one has the most "zh" sound, the middle one has less, and the last one, "ruan" (软), has almost no "zh" sound.

Thinking of an American "R" sound in terms of pinyin spelling is confusing, because pinyin changes the actual sound of an "R" syllable based on the vowel than comes after the R.

So, the American "R" sounds closest to a pinyin "ru*" sound, like 软 or 弱.  Smiley

That's a good question, Rambo. In America, good service is rewarded with "tips" and restaurant workers get very little pay without the tips. That gives them an incentive to refill drinks and make sure the customers are well-taken care of. The standard tip is 15%, so if the meal is 10 dollars, then a good tip would be $1.50 to $2.
