Sure, Bruce!  I have traveled to 29 countries, so I have many recommendations on favorite places.  What do you like to do?  Here are some of my favorite places for doing different things:

For hiking tropical island mountains: Hawaii

For exploring tropical mountain rain forests: Costa Rica

For exploring ancient Aztec ruins: Mexico

For bicycling around ancient city walls: Xi'an

For drinking coffee under the stars: Argentina

For drinking coffee in a beautiful city: Paris

For climbing castles in the Winter: German

For climbing castles in the Summer: Scotland

For scuba diving in the ocean: Florida Keys, USA

For walking along a beautiful beach: Charleston, SC, USA

For climbing volcanoes: Canary Islands, North Africa

thank you for the kind recommendation.
do you think it's safe to travel in mexico?
a lot of travellers got killed in mexico [some in the hotel] every year and it is supposed to be very dangerous to drive a car while travelling there. it's easy to get lost your way.
can you tell me how many cities in mexico you had been in?
thank you. Shocked

I've heard it's not so safe to travel in Mexico, too. I've been to Tijuana (near Southern California), Acapulco, and Cozumel. My favorite of the three was Cozumel, and I think it's safe for tourists to go there.

UIUC is an awesome school with a great reputation. I once went there for a conference when I was in high school. It was during the Christmas vacation (after Christmas and during New Year), so it was FREEZING cold (snow and ice). We stayed in the dorms while the students were all home. It's a large university, and I assume you'll find your new community near your specific college buildings.

Illinois is considered the "mid-west" of America (even though it is on the Eastern half of America). Chicago is one of the largest cities in the mid-west, and you will be able to travel easily around the US by air travel in/out of Chicago's international airport. I think the people should be kind, and the temperature fairly comfortable (tho maybe cold winters).

My grandparents once lived in Chicago for a few years of their newly married life, and my grandmother always talked about how it was such a happy time in the city. There was a lot of snowfall when they arrived, so she learned the city by the snowdrifts (piles of snow). So when the snow melted in the Spring, she had to learn the city all over again. They also took riverboat rides.

I think you'll have an awesome time!
