Hello again from America! Many of you have asked about American supermarkets,
so I wanted to make a photo gallery of a new grocery store that
just opened in my hometown. The name of the store is Whole Foods
Market, and it's a great example of what supermarkets look like
here.
New supermarket words and phrases:
- aisle: a lane of food and products on shelves where customers can walk and shop
"While you go to the bakery to get bread, I will go to the fruit
section to get apples. Then we can meet on the imported foods
aisle to look for something to cook for dinner."
- canister: a container for tea leaves and other non-liquid item
"Please fill my tea canister with Oolong tea leaves."
(Note: a can is a container for liquid items: "a can of Coke")
- recipe: the list of ingredients and instructions on how to make a certain dish of food
"Do you have a good recipe for apple pie? I don't know how to
make it."
- sold out: when the store sells all of one item and not one remains for sale
"I asked the manager if the store had any imported tea from
China. He said they usually carry it, but today it was all
sold out."
- veggies: slang for vegetables
"What fruit and veggies do we need to buy at the store?"

Here is the entrance to Whole Foods Market. |

When you enter the store, you first see the fruit and vegetable section.

My parents look for "xiao ching cai" in the vegetable section. In America, that
vegetable is called "baby bok choi" and it was all sold out!

Here is a touch-screen computer where customers can print out recipes and nutritional
information.

Americans love cheese. Here is a very large cheese section. Other grocery stores
don't usually have a cheese section this large, but Whole
Foods carries many international cheeses.
|

Here are some
big cheese blocks!

The wine section
|

The grocery store has many aisles and sections, but I only took a photo of the
imported foods aisle. Here are some imported foods from
Asia.
|

Here is a place where customers can order freshly made pizzas and other snacks.
|

Here is China's number one export! Whole Foods carries all of the popular big
brands of beer like Budweiser and Heineken, but they also
carry smaller brands like some of the ones you see in this
photo.
|

Here is a bakery and cafe where customers can buy bread, cookies, cakes, and
coffee to drink now or take home and brew. |

Here is the tea section where customers can purchase tea canisters or measure
out loose-leaf tea. |
